Many weight loss plans were introduced in public to attract people looking for a fast, easy, safe or effective for weight loss. Some of the popular diet programs are low fat, low carb, Atkins, Glycemic Index and sugar.


But how do you know which is best for you? Here are some practical tips to help you decide which of the weight loss plans might be effective for you.

The math is pretty simple. A pound of fat equals 3500 calories. Want to lose a pound a week? Then you need to consume 3500 calories less per week that you use. It's about 500 calories a day. To cut 500 calories a day from your normal daily diet, maintaining the same level of activity, you can lose about a pound a week.

Okay-it doesn't look like much, especially if you're over 25 pounds overweight. Study after study has shown, though, that people who lose weight gradually--at a rate of 1-2 pounds per week are far more likely to keep the weight off and maintain a normal weight throughout life.

So, what exactly is 500 calories? If you are going to reduce the daily intake of 500 calories, it is helpful to understand what you need to cut it out, right? Here's how easy it is to lose 500 calories a day:

♦ Use milk instead of cream in coffee. Saving? 50 calories per Cup.

♦ Skip the butter on your baked potato. Saving? 100 calories

♦ Drink fruit flavored water instead of a soda 16 oz. Saving? 200 calories

♦ I miss the Big Mac and a side salad instead. A Big Mac weighs a whopping 460 calories. A fresh salad with a light dressing? Less than 100! Saving? 360 calories

♦ Switch from the bag of chips. An average bag of snack chip based has more than 300 calories. Saving? 300 calories

♦ Eat your corn on the ear. To 1 cup of canned corn service has 165 calories. An ear of corn is 85. Saving? 80 calories.

♦ Switch to low fat cream cheese on your bagel. Saving? 90 calories per ounce.

♦ Love those fries and can't give up? Swap the fries thick cut steak to skinny ones. Thin French fries absorb more oil than thicker, meatier ones. Saving? 50 calories per 4 oz

If you prefer to watch the weight loss from an operating perspective, you can even lose a pound a week by raising the activity level of 500 calories per day. How easy is it to do? Take a look:

♦ Take a half hour walk around the Park. Aim for a pace that is slightly faster than a walk, but not fast enough to be gasping for air. Burn: 160 calories.

♦ Grab your bike and take a ride. Addressing some moderate hills and aim for about five miles. Burn: 250 calories

♦ Go dancing-and really DANCE. The longer you are out on the floor rather than at the table to drink beverages high in calories, the more you get out of it. Dance that makes you breath and warms your body is less than one calorie savings. Burn: 400 calories per hour

Swimming is great for you, and a lot of fun, too. Water resistance means burn more calories, and avoid the impact of stress on your joints, dance aerobics or walking. Do a few laps at slow walking pace-if you can get up to an hour you'll be going great! Burn: 510 calories

♦ Get out in your garden. An hour of gardening activities including bending and stretching can burn up to calories as a brisk walk. Burn: 250 calories.

♦ Play a game of tennis. Connect with a friend to a game of tennis weekly and you'll be surprised by the difference. An hour of vigorous tennis is one of the best calorie burners around. Burn: 800 calories

It is important to keep in mind that all exercise/calories numbers are based on a woman weighing 130 pounds. If you weigh more, you burn more. Would you like an added bonus to burn calories through exercise? When you exercise, build muscle by converting it from grease. Three guesses what kind of tissue in the body burns more calories--even when they're exercising. You got it-the body uses more energy to maintain muscle and fuel than it does the fat.

For best results, mix and match food saver with exercises that burn calories. Do keep in mind that eating less than 1000 calories a day for more than a few days you will convince your body that is starving and slow down your metabolism.
