Fat Loss 4 Idiots Is Just Another Crash Diet

The makers of Fat Loss 4 Idiots claim that low calorie diets don't work. But how does their own diet stack up? How many calories does it contain? I took a closer look at their diet and you might be surprised by what I found out.

It's actually impossible to get a completely accurate count of how many calories you'll eat in a day on the Fat Loss 4 Idiots diet. After all, part of the appeal is that there is no measuring and no calorie counting. But you are supposed to eat "only until you are just-full", not stuffed. So for the purposes of my study, I took this to mean an average serving size. I then looked up the calorie counts for a few sample meals. There may be variations here as well, depending on brand choices. However, despite these potential discrepancies, I believe that you'll be able to get a general idea.

Day One
Meal #1: Flavored Oatmeal (1 cup=169 calories)
Meal #2: Tuna Salad (1 cup=295 calories)
Meal #3: Sandwich (2 slices bread, 3 slices ham, 1 tablespoon mayonnaise=332 calories)
Meal #4: Scrambled Eggs (2 eggs=149 calories)
Total Calories for the Day: 945 calories

Day Two
Meal #1: Banana Milk Shake (10 fl.oz.=459 calories)
Meal #2: Chicken (3 oz.=201 calories)
Meal #3: Scrambled Eggs and Mixed Vegetables (2 eggs and 1 cup mixed vegetables=289 calories)
Meal #4: Cottage Cheese (1 cup=200 calories)
Total Calories for the Day: 1149 calories

Day Three
Meal #1: Chicken (3 oz.=201 calories)
Meal #2: Fruit Salad (1/2 melon, 1 cup strawberries, 1 cup grapes=259 calories)
Meal $3: Fish Filet (3 oz.=173 calories)
Meal #4: Cottage Cheese (1 cup=200 calories)
Total Calories for the Day: 833 calories

While actual calories consumed may be a bit higher than those listed here based on your portion sizes, you can still see that this is a low calorie diet.

If you take in too few calories, your body will go into "starvation mode". You may lose weight, but you will also be losing muscle and slowing down your metabolism. Doctors generally recommend never going below 1200 calories, and even 1200 calories is too low for some people. All three examples days listed above dip below 1200 calories.

This makes the Fat Loss 4 Idiots diet just another crash diet. Sure, you will probably lose some weight on this diet, but it's not in a healthy way and it's likely that the weight will come back after you go off the diet.

Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle is one of the most comprehensive books on nutrition, weight loss, and muscle gain that I have read. It's a much better investment than Fat Loss 4 Idiots.

Shannon Tani is a former fattie, who weighed over 220lbs. She has currently lost over 70lbs. One day she realized that people would rather hear dieting advice from someone who's "been there, done that" than a boring old doctor who's never been fat a day in his life. So she started the website Better Off Fat to share her experiences and ideas.
